Software Engineering: The Most Rewarding Career Option

The software industry has placed India under the spotlight and has also fulfilled many dreams of young technocrats. Attractive pay scales, enticing opportunities, and a plethora of employment options have made software engineering a much in-demand profession.

Software engineering has emerged as one of the fastest growing occupationin India since the turn of the millennium. It offers a robust career growth and a fat pay cheque. Almost everything that we see around us today, including computer operating systems, video games, digital devices and several others gadgets, are handiworks of software engineers. These professionals analyse needs and then design, code, test and develop software programmes.

Software engineers have to be determined professionals who can work under pressure. They must be organised and methodical, having excellent communication skills and the understanding of how a business is run. But more importantly, software engineers must have a solid understanding of how computer systems work. They must be naturally inclined towards information technology (IT) and must promptly adapt to changes in that industry.

India is a major global player in IT and software engineering. There is also an indigenous growth of the market inside the country, which has made the sector immensely popular among the young brigade. It has ushered in significant changes in several allied fields like telecom, banking, insurance, real estate and others, making lives easier and allowing people to dream bigger. And it doesn’t stop there. People working in software companies are often deputed abroad to client sites for projects. Their salaries are usually doubled during the deputation period.

What does being a Software Engineer Entail?

Software Engineering essentially entails the use of mathematical analysis, knowledge of computer systems and computer science, as well as computer engineering in a combination in order to ensure the proper designing as well as implementation of software systems. A software engineer essentially designs software systems and frameworks, along with ensuring their proper functioning through testing as well as developing these systems on a regular basis. This involves programming or coding the software in a system or a network of systems. Moreover, software engineers also look into the requirements of the user, on the basis of which they design and structure the software systems in such a way so as to best benefit the users themselves.

Educational requirement

To kick-start a career as a software engineer, you should have to undergo a degree course like BE, ME, B Tech or M Tech. Several institutes offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in software engineering. The minimum eligibility to get admitted in a BE or B Tech course in any of the institutions, is 10+2 or any equivalent examination with chemistry, physics and mathematics as major subjects. All BE and B Tech courses in software engineering are of four-year duration. Selection to these courses is based on the 10+2 exams and the marks secured in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the IITs.

Several states also offer their own JEEs for admission into regional engineering colleges (RECs). You can also take the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) or any equivalent national or state level entrance test. You have to successfully complete your BE or B Tech course to pursue ME or M Tech. These days, several private colleges offer BE and B Tech courses. But before you enrol in one of these institutions, ensure that they are registered with the affiliating body.

You can also pursue BCA or MCA for a software engineering career. Most universities and many engineering colleges offer BCA and MCA courses. Admission to these courses is based on a written test. Some colleges also offer regular bachelor’s and master’s degree in software engineering.
